Preparing Your Heart for Fasting
Fasting without self-awareness is like driving without a destination. You might move, but you won't arrive anywhere meaningful.
These reflection questions are designed to:
- ✓ Clarify your spiritual goals before you begin
- ✓ Identify potential challenges so you can prepare
- ✓ Assess your emotional and spiritual state honestly
- ✓ Set you up for breakthrough by addressing root issues
How to Use This Tool
Take your time. Work through each question slowly and honestly. Your answers auto-save, so you can pause and return anytime.
Be honest. Don't write what sounds spiritual—write what's true. God already knows your heart.
Print when finished. Keep your completed reflections to review during and after your fast.

Section 1: Spiritual Alignment
1. What is God placing on my heart in this season?
Take time to sit in silence. Ask the Holy Spirit: "What are You highlighting in my life right now?"
This could be:
- A specific Scripture that keeps coming to mind
- A persistent burden for a person, place, or issue
- A calling or assignment you've been avoiding
- A sin pattern you need to confront
- A relationship that needs restoration
- A decision you need clarity on
Write it down. Don't edit yourself. Be honest about what God is stirring.
2. How do I sense God leading me through this fast?
Consider:
- Do you sense He's calling you to fast for repentance? Deliverance? Preparation? Guidance? Worship?
- Is there a specific Scripture He's given you to anchor your fast?
- Do you have a sense of what He wants to do through this fast?
If you don't have clarity yet, that's okay. That's why you're fasting—to gain clarity.
But if you do sense direction, write it down. This will keep you focused when the fast gets difficult.
3. Are there areas in my life where I've been holding back from full surrender?
Fasting exposes what we're clinging to. Before you begin, honestly assess:
- What comfort am I unwilling to sacrifice?
- What control am I unwilling to release?
- What sin am I excusing or hiding?
- What relationship am I prioritizing over God?
- What ambition am I pursuing outside of His will?
This question is uncomfortable. That's the point.
Fasting won't work if you're holding something back. Identify it now so you can surrender it during the fast.
Section 2: Purpose and Intentions
4. What breakthrough, clarity, or transformation am I seeking from this fast?
Be specific. Vague prayers get vague answers.
Instead of: "I want to feel closer to God."
Try: "I want to break the fear that's keeping me from launching my business."
Instead of: "I need help with my emotions."
Try: "I want freedom from the shame that triggers my people-pleasing."
Instead of: "I need direction."
Try: "I need to know whether to say yes to this partnership or walk away."
God honors specificity. What are you specifically asking Him for?
5. What does success look like at the end of this fast?
How will you know if this fast was effective?
Define success in spiritual terms, not just emotional feelings:
- Will you have clarity on a decision?
- Will you have repented of a specific sin?
- Will you have broken a stronghold?
- Will you have received a prophetic word or direction?
- Will you have experienced freedom from fear, shame, or self-doubt?
Write down what success looks like so you can recognize it when it happens.
6. What does God want me to let go of, and what does He want me to embrace?
Fasting is about both subtraction and addition.
Let go of:
- Lies you've believed
- Patterns you've tolerated
- Relationships that aren't life-giving
- Ambitions that aren't Kingdom-aligned
- Control you've been clinging to
Embrace:
- God's truth about your identity
- New rhythms of obedience
- Healthy boundaries
- Kingdom assignments
- Dependence on Him
Make two lists: What I'm releasing and What I'm receiving.
Section 3: Challenges and Strengths
7. What fears, habits, or distractions might challenge my focus during this fast?
Anticipate the obstacles now so they don't derail you later.
Common challenges:
- Physical hunger — How will you respond when cravings hit?
- Emotional triggers — What situations make you want to break your fast early?
- Busy schedules — How will you protect time for prayer and Scripture?
- Social pressure — How will you navigate meals with others or questions about why you're fasting?
- Spiritual attack — How will you respond when doubt, discouragement, or distraction arises?
For each challenge, create a response plan.
Example:
Challenge: I'll be tempted to break my fast when I'm stressed.
Response: When stress hits, I'll pray Philippians 4:6-7 instead of reaching for food.
8. How can I rely on God's strength to overcome these challenges?
You can't fast in your own willpower. You need:
- Scripture to combat lies
- Prayer to sustain you
- The Holy Spirit to empower you
- Accountability to encourage you
What specific verses will you lean on?
Who will you ask to check in on you during the fast?
What prayer will you pray when you feel weak?
Write it down now. When the challenge comes, you'll already have your response ready.
9. How has God been faithful in my past seasons of fasting or spiritual growth?
Look back before you look forward.
Reflect on:
- Times when God came through for you
- Prayers He answered
- Breakthroughs He gave you
- Fasts you've completed before
- Seasons when you trusted Him and He provided
Remembering God's faithfulness builds faith for the present.
If you've never fasted before, remember other times God has been faithful—when He provided, protected, guided, or delivered you.
Write down at least 3 examples of His faithfulness. When doubt comes during the fast, return to this list.
Section 4: Emotional and Spiritual Giants
10. What emotional or spiritual giants have been holding me back from fully walking in my calling?
Consider the giants:
- Fear — Are you afraid of failure, rejection, or visibility?
- Self-doubt — Do you question whether you're equipped or qualified?
- Perfectionism — Are you stuck in cycles of overwork or never feeling "good enough"?
- Shame — Are you carrying guilt from past mistakes that God has already forgiven?
- People-pleasing — Are you saying yes to everyone except God?
- Procrastination — Are you delaying obedience because you're waiting for the "perfect time"?
Name the giant. You can't slay what you won't name.
11. How are these emotional giants blocking my calling in ministry, business, or relationships?
Ask yourself:
- In my ministry: What emotional giant is keeping me from stepping into greater leadership or influence?
- In my business: What emotional giant is preventing me from launching, scaling, or leading boldly?
- In my relationships: What emotional giant is sabotaging intimacy or trust?
Write it down. During your fast, you'll address this giant with prayer, Scripture, and the Holy Spirit's power.
Section 5: Gratitude and Growth
12. What can I thank God for right now, even as I anticipate the breakthroughs to come?
Gratitude positions you for more.
Before you fast for what you don't have, thank God for what you do have:
- Salvation
- His presence
- Past faithfulness
- Current provision
- Relationships
- Opportunities
- Health
- Calling
Write a gratitude list of at least 10 things.
When the fast gets hard, return to this list. Gratitude refocuses your heart on God's goodness.
Section 6: Kingdom Impact
13. How does my personal transformation impact the way I serve God's Kingdom in my business, ministry, or leadership?
Your breakthrough isn't just for you—it's for those you lead.
Reflect on:
- How will breaking fear allow me to lead more boldly?
- How will clarity on my calling affect my team or congregation?
- How will freedom from perfectionism improve my productivity and peace?
- How will deliverance from people-pleasing help me make better decisions?
Your transformation has a ripple effect. When you're free, those you lead are freed. When you're aligned, those you serve are blessed.
14. What steps can I take to align my goals and actions with His will?
Fasting reveals God's will. But revelation without obedience is wasted.
Ask:
- What action is God calling me to take?
- What decision is He asking me to make?
- What relationship does He want me to prioritize or release?
- What habit does He want me to establish or break?
- What risk does He want me to take in faith?
Write down at least 3 action steps you sense God is leading you toward.
After your fast, you'll revisit this list and act on what He's confirmed.
